Agriturismo Le Filigare
Agriturismo Le Filigare is the name of the hill where the farmhouse in Chianti, between Siena and Florence, is located. Dating back to the 11th century, the main hamlet was known in the area as Fiaccole di Sopra. The name derives from a slang term, which means “upper torch”. A long time ago, during the commemoration of its Patron Saint, the hamlet, located on a dominant position, used to be lit with fire torches and the locals used to gather here to celebrate.
Our home has a rich past. In 1716, for the first time in history, the Grand Duchy of Tuscany set the boundaries as the production zone for the “real” Chianti wine. Le Filigare settlements where included within these boundaries. Our home also became the first established holiday home in Chianti in the early 90s. Before then, it had boasted exclusive names on its guest-list: in 1857, Pope Pio IX spent his holiday at Le Filigare, invited by the owner the Arch Duke of Tuscany to savour the delicious wines and food and unwind in this splendid setting.
Nature has gifted the area with the right ingredients: a soil composed mainly of sandstones combined with the location, between 400 and 500 meters above sea level, where there is no fog or frost, have provided an ideal basis for excellent wine production. The gentle slopes exposed to the South assure good drainage. A dense wooded area provides sheltering to the northern vines, while constant sunshine and lack of humidity ensure perfect grape ripening. Here, the land is mainly composed of clay and imbued with fossils, which renders it permeated.
This is one of the main requirements for the production of Chianti Classico DOCG in which the Sangiovese grape has an ample predominance of about 90%. There is also a lesser percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot & Syrah grapes. Our vineyards at Le Filigare cover about 11 hectares and produce an average of 40/50.000 bottles a year. Our philosophy is to produce a limited amount of particularly fine quality. We are proud of our selected production, which has successfully won many awards in the wine industry throughout the years. Of considerable importance is also our Virgin Olive Oil production and spirits such as Grappa, Vinsanto & Brandy.
